Will the church suffer persecution?

We are told in Matthew 24:9 (NIV) "Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me." Later in verse 22 we are told, "If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened." There are some that would argue that this persecution is only talking about the Jews, but there is nothing in scripture that states this. Furthermore, the book of Revelation reveals at the 5th seal those who have been martyred for the sake of Christ. The good news is that Jesus also states in Matthew 24:29,  "Immediately after the distress of those days "´the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.'" This is the sign of the Day of the Lord and as we have seen in this study, the Day of the Lord will be initiated by the rapture of the saints.
